DAVISON (DTV) – (6/10/26) – “I want my money!”
Like the rest of Flint residents, Tommie Brown Jr has been waiting over 10 years since the crisis began to receive the justice the people of Flint deserve for the struggles the Flint Water crisis put them through.
Nearly 5 years ago, the 625 million dollar Flint Water settlement was approved. Just a few months ago, after waiting and waiting, the first settlement claims were finally sent out. But, some citizens haven’t heard back or were denied, and don’t understand why, like Zaria Jackson and Brenda Sasser.
Jackson said, “I felt like they didn’t do enough investigation. They didn’t really care. They didn’t ask the questions where they could show. And of course, I don’t really. Okay. I did my part with as far as submitting the medical forms that they asked for. I signed every application of paper that they gave regarding all the information about. Only to be steered away all these years later and be denied.”
“That was probably 2019, maybe 2020. Yeah. And, they sent me some information. I had to go to a store to pick it up, and I filled out the information, and I sent, and I haven’t heard any more about that.” said Sasser.
Frustration comes with the little information they have received to get the money they deserve for their basic necessities. But, to them, their calls for action are being ignored by the government.
“I mean, it’s very disappointing because that money could’ve gone towards getting some of the stuff done. It actually fixed around the house, like getting the actual filter water system that they’re not giving out anymore. So that’s the first clean water where our skin is not itching in any type of creams. Is that for. It wasn’t fair.” said Jackson.
Sasser voiced her frustration when she said, “You know, they said the water, we’re going to get paid for the water. And I’m just thinking they just talking, you know, because nobody, I don’t know, nobody has gotten paid for the water.”
Tommie Brown Jr. says, “Pay some money to them? Pay some money to us. We’ve been waiting a mighty long time for that! They want us to pay for water. Pay me for the water in our drinking when it’s all messed up. Then we can talk about payment.”
Anyone who did file a claim and is waiting to receive their money can check the Flint Water Settlement Website for the status of their claim or contact information for claim administrators. If your claim was accepted, you will receive an “Award Notice” in your mail or e-mail. On the award notice, you will find the website address where you will fill in your information, a unique user ID, and a list of payment options you will select on the website.
But even with these payments, the people of Flint are still upset with all the problems the crisis has left behind.
Sasser said, “It’s frustrating and it’s terrible. We live in the United States of America, Flint town Michigan, with water that’s been jacked up over ten years. It’s terrible. This is really terrible.”
