After 4 years of being a finalist, DTV was announced one of the seven 2017 Broadcast Pacemaker Winners for the best high school newscast in the nation.  The award was given this year in Dallas by the National Scholastic Press Association. This is DTV’s 4th year winning the Pacemaker since 2003. The newscast features Alesia Paxton, winner of the Student Production award for her Domestic Abuse PSA, Execute Producer, Jordyn Bruns, and the Sports Director, Kaitlin Abdella. Daviosn’s alumni and state champion runner Joe Renner was recently in a Grand Valley commercial.He been working hard both in school and on the track team.he tweeted grand valley and asked what can he do to get a commercial and a billboard  #golakers !!! Watch the commerical here. 

Yesterday was a big day in DTV history, for the first time ever we were nominated and WON a national student production award! After an afternoon of DTV just celebrating the fact that we were even nominated the whole crew sat down to watch the live stream. Dancing with the Star’s Tom Bergeron was the host, and when he announced that DTV had won the serious news category for our Domestic abuse story we all went crazy. We are so excited for this incredible honer and are so glad that Madison’s story is getting out there and this award definitely goes out to her. You can watch the Abuse story here. 

Vice President Mike Pence made a two day stop in Michigan to rally support for the new Tax reform. He spoke to the workers at the American Axial and Manufacturing company  about what this new bill would do if passed. Some of the main points are that it would simplify the tax code by reducing the  7 tax brackets to 3 and make filing  easier. Also, this bill would eliminate the estate tax and eliminates some tax deductions. But if a big tax brake like this one passes a big question is where will the money come from? That is a question that has yet to be answered. One thing is for sure that to pass this bill both sides will have to work together.

During a Press Conference this morning at Virginia Tech, Mark Edwards, the lead scientist in the Flint water investigations announced that after 5 rounds of testing on the water of Flint, the levels have dramatically changed and have found themselves slightly below normal. They will continue to conduct tests on the water to make sure that it stays below normal levels and does not fluctuate, but for now, scientifically the crisis is over. The people of Flint have reason to be in doubt and Mark Edwards himself even believes it will be awhile before trust is restored between the people of Flint and their government but there is no denying that the trust has been depleted and the damage cannot be undone. DTV has been with the Crisis and we will still be as the entire thing unfolds.

DTV has been picked to have our Flint documentary Undrinkable in the Traverse City Film Festival on the 28th of July. There will be Film makers from all over the world and DTV will be among them, and will even be participating in the panel after to discuss our work . At the festival there will be three other film focusing on Flint and the water crisis, one of the biggest news topics of last year, Undrinkable being the only Documentary there created by High School Students. This Festival was founded by Davison own Michael Moore, who has spoken out a lot for Flint and helped get Undrinkable out to the people.  Tickets sales start on the 15th at 10 AM at the box office or at 6 pm online, general admission is 12 dollars. DTV is honored with this opportunity to be recognized along with other great film makers and represent student journalist.

Five people involved in the Flint Water Crisis were charged with manslaughter along with other charges.  This is the biggest step towards justice for Flint yet.

Nick Lyon, an MDHHS Director, was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Misconduct in Office.  Darnell Earley, who was a former Emergency Manager of   Flint, was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter.  Liane Shekter-Smith, the Chief of Drinking Water and Municipal Assistance at DEQ, was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter.  Howard Croft, Director of Public Works of Flint, was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter.  Stephen Busch, Michigan DEQ Supervisor, was also charged with Involuntary Manslaughter.

Eden Wells, an MDHHS Medical Executive, was not accused with manslaughter but was charged with Obstruction of Justice and Lying to a Peace Officer.

Many people questioned why Governor Snyder was not charged along with the rest of these people. Schuette did say that they tried to interview the Governor but were unsuccessful.
