DAVISON (DTV) – (3/6/2020) – After acts of youth violence or self-harm, facts often come that peers knew something was going to happen but didn’t know what to do with it.
To be factual, in every four out of five school shootings at the LEAST, information comes out that the shooter’s friends knew the shooter’s intentions. Also, seven out of ten people who committed suicide told one another about their plans. If people know what to do in these situations there wouldn’t be nearly as much tragedy as there is today.
To solve this issue, Davison Community Schools is introducing Sandy Hook Promise’s Say Something program.
Say Something will raise awareness and teach students how to realize warning signs, threats and signals; and to “say something” to a trusted adult. During this week, they have been and will be participating in Say Something Week by sharing resources with parents and students about the tools available to them to report suspicious or alarming behavior.
Here at Davison Community Schools, some of these tools include:
The SafeCards App (download the app from your Apple App store or Google Play)
The Report Bullying link on our home page, www.davisonschools.org
OK2SAY https://www.michigan.gov/
Say Something encourages teachers to talk with their students about the importance of being upstanders – and saying something to prevent violence and to look out for one another. Attached will be a brochure for parents with more information on how you can talk to your student about being an upstander.
Also, many teachers here at DHS are trained in mental health first aid and have signs hanging out side of their rooms. These teachers have gone through training to help students who are concerned about their personal safety or another student’s mental health.
All in all, if you see something you should say something to help keep our schools a safe place for everyone.
