While journalists may be getting a bad reputation now, the future of journalism does look bright. Like DTV there are many high schools and even middle schools that have journalism programs that are going above and beyond the call of duty and sharing their voice.

In the early fall of 2017, DTV huddled up and decided to make a special regarding the topic of trust in news. Throughout early December we gathered information, watched programs to truly understand our topic, and began the process of putting the pieces together. We took a trip to Washington, D.C, to get all the information we could to further our knowledge on the topic. While there we interviewed many people, including reporters, photographers, a radio host, and a historian from the Newseum.
Media influence on the public. Eugene tells us about Sputnik.
The history of hatred of media. Zach tells us about the future of news.
Julia tells us about the future of media. Eden tells us what is the purpose of local and national news.
DTV also went out into our community to obtain key interviews with people like Joel Feick from WEYI-NBC 25 and FOX 66, Al Tompkins from the Poynter Institute, Jeremy Steele the director for the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association, Joshua Kilburn who was a former fake news writer, and Mara MacDonald who is a reporter for WDIV in Detroit

Trust in the news is changing. Stories come out every day with false information and facts that have been twisted. The relationship that journalists had with the people has been stretched thin. The necessity of news media along with their duty to inform has become apparent in many places throughout history, such as Edward Snowden, the Vietnam war, and even the Watergate scandal. In this special “In News We Trust?” we will cover topics from fake news, local vs national media and the attacks on the media by President Donald Trump. Will the people be able to trust their news again?

It’s no secret. Over the past few years, there has been a declining trust in the news the public receives on a daily basis and the media in general.
DTV feels this topic really hits close to home. It is also an issue that we feel hasn’t been getting enough attention and was relevant, especially in the recent political climate.
During this special we’ll give you a look into the world of journalism and present views from all sides. We will cover topics from fake news, local vs national media, and the attacks on the media by President Trump.
Can we break down the barriers between people and the media? Will people ever again be able to say “In News We Trust?”

The amount of people on the internet has been increasing steadily throughout the last century and with the new, constant exposure to social media and instant messaging systems; problems like Cyberbullying and Sexting are at an all-time high among teens. With this increase and a recent case right in the Davison community, Michigan State Police came to host seminars regarding the dangers of these actions on the web.
DTV’s Rebekah Allen followed the story and produced a two-part series called Internet Issues with the first installment tackling Cyberbullying and the second piece informed students on the dangers of sexting. The series aired on Monday, March 26th and the following day on the 27th during the DTV daily newscast. You can head on over to our YouTube page DTV News or click the link below to educate yourself on the dangers. Remember to think before you send!
