The Three D’s…Don’t Drive Distracted!

On Wednesday, May 2nd Senior Kacie Love put on a Mock Crash outside of the Cardinal Gym for part of her Capstone Project. It was a 2 car accident, with the blue car rear-ending the green one. This resulted in 3 people injured, and one dead. Sadly like how we see in real life, an innocent life was taken at the hand of a distracted driver, this is an example of the biggest issue in modern teenage drivers, texting.  The 4 students involved in the crash wanted to drive the message home about what happens if you decide to take someone’s life into your hands in this way. All the Seniors and Juniors of Davison High School gathered around the island outside of the Gym to watch local first responders and Allen funeral home put on a dramatization of a fatal crash.

In the Line of Fire- Update

538. That’s the number of mass shootings that have claimed the lives of hundreds of people and injured thousands since DTV released the 2017 special In the Line of Fire on April 28th. Three of the more notable shootings that occurred after In the Line of Fire are the Las Vegas shooting on October 1st, the Texas Church shooting on November 5th and the Parkland shooting on February 14th, 2018.

The Las Vegas Shooting that took place at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival is the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in US history. Steven Paddock opened fire and killed 58 victims, and injured 500 more. His AR-15 rifle was equipped with a bump stock, making it capable of rapid fire. His motives are unknown, and will remain unknown, as Paddock was later found dead in the his hotel room, having shot himself using the same weapon from the massacre.

At the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, David Patrick Kelley carried out 26 killings. To add to the deaths, 20 others were injured in the deadliest shooting in Texas history. This was sparked by an argument between Kelley and his mother-in-law, a member of the church. Kelley died during a police chase from a self inflicted gunshot to the head.

Awareness for these massacres drastically rose after the Parkland shooting in Florida. This took place on February 14, 2018, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school. Killing 17 students and faculty, and injuring 14, this shooting caused an uprising and brought light to this epidemic, not only to adults, but to students as well.

DTV News spoke to Officer Chad Haynes about how he feels about the impact the shootings have had on our country, “I think we’ve become more alert to the dangers around us.”

Teens everywhere are raising their voices and trying to make a difference in the world. Florida has made their gun laws stricter when they raised the minimum age to purchase guns, established a waiting period, and banned bump stocks. On top of that,  there was the March for our Lives that took place on March 24th, a worldwide protest that brought people together for what they believe in.

 

Despite these changes, the number of mass shootings has still seen a rapid increase over time. Just ten years ago, there were 8, killing a total of 27 and injuring 23. In 2017 alone, there were 427.

The rise in these killings has been credited to multiple reasons, from the easy ability to obtain a gun, to the publicity that these murderers gain. Some believe that because of the media coverage, the killers are trying to outdo the ones before them.

No matter what the cause of the shootings may be, they’re still tragic and horrific events. If you notice or hear suspicious behavior, contact law enforcement immediately. You may be able to stop another one of these incidents from occurring.

Team 3534 Heading to Worlds

Over 30,000 people from all over the world are gathered at Cobo center right now in Detroit for the FIRST robotics world championship.

Our Davison House of cards started a bit rough yesterday with scouting but made quick adjustments.

All the team’s and alliances are gathered here to fight it out to make it to the first elimination round.

Today our cards are currently 2 and 0 with there alliance and ranked 43 out of 68.

But rankings are constantly changing. The team will be participating in another match coming up soon.

All in all this is a great experience for the kids. These teams will be competing all weekend long so stay up to date on our Twitter page DTV_official for more updates.

In News We Trust: Web Extras

In the early fall of 2017, DTV huddled up and decided to make a special regarding the topic of trust in news. Throughout early December we gathered information, watched programs to truly understand our topic, and began the process of putting the pieces together.  We took a trip to Washington, D.C, to get all the information we could to further our knowledge on the topic. While there we interviewed many people, including reporters, photographers, a radio host, and a historian from the Newseum.

In News We Trust?

Trust in the news is changing. Stories come out every day with false information and facts that have been twisted. The relationship that journalists had with the people has been stretched thin. The necessity of news media along with their duty to inform has become apparent in many places throughout history, such as Edward Snowden, the Vietnam war, and even the Watergate scandal.  In this special “In News We Trust?” we will cover topics from fake news, local vs national media and the attacks on the media by President Donald Trump. Coming Soon: DTV Presents, “In News We Trust?”

It’s no secret. Over the past few years, there has been a declining trust in the news the public receives on a daily basis and the media in general.

DTV feels this topic really hits close to home. It is also an issue that we feel hasn’t been getting enough attention and was relevant, especially in the recent political climate.

During this special we’ll give you a look into the world of journalism and present views from all sides. We will cover topics from fake news, local vs national media, and the attacks on the media by President Trump.

Can we break down the barriers between people and the media? Will people ever again be able to say “In News We Trust?”
