DAVISON(DTV)- (2/24/20) – The Davison wrestlers have been having a dominant postseason run for the 2019-2020 season, and it all started back in the SVL.
After dominant blowout wins against SVL foes Lapeer and Grand Blanc in the regular season, districts was more of the same, beating the Bobcats in districts semi-finals 58-5 and the Lightning 70-9 in the district finals.
One week later, the team headed out to Midland for regionals. They shut out the Swartz Creek Dragons 74-0 in the semifinals, and in the regional finals took down Oxford 62-9.
Senior Andrew Chambal(130) says the team is upping the ante at practice in preparation for quarter-finals against Clarkston, and a possible rematch against Detroit Catholic Central, the only team to hand the Cards losses this year.
Upping the ante certainly came in handy, as the Cardinals blew out the wolves 45-3 at the quarterfinals on Friday the 28th. From there they had a rematch with Brighton from last year to look forward to on Saturday.
They started out of the ordinary, down 0-5 after the first match, but quickly picked things up against the Bulldogs. They had a 21 point run through the next 4 matches, with senior Jay Nivison (171) getting a crucial pin. Davison kept on rolling, winning the semi-finals with a score of 35-23, advancing to the state finals yet again and pinning them against Detroit Catholic Central for the final time this season.
There was no shortage of drama between the Shamrocks and Cardinals, with a back and forth match and pins left and right. All until the slam that had everyone talking. Davison Junior Alex Facundo(171) was wrestling Shamrock Manny Rojas(171), when he picked Rojas up for the controversial move. The play was whistled dead, with the referee calling an illegal slam on the play. Shortly after, the DCC Coach called Rojas over as he was preparing to resume the match to have him checked by the medical examiner. He was ruled unable to continue on, and Facundo was disqualified as a result. From there, Davison was unable to rebound with the loss of the top 171lb wrestler in the country, with DCC crowned champs once again after winning 34-23.
Individual state finals are coming up, stay tuned for results!
